“Our goal is to make the space more sustainable for our staff and visitors by collecting accurate indoor climate data to enhance our sustainability reporting and guide our actions.”
Geno Tsonkov, Deputy Director of The Earth and Man National Museum
Challenges
The Earth and Man National Museum occupies a historic building dating back to the late 19th century, which has seen diverse uses including as a military workshop for Sofia's artillery arsenal and as the State Printing Office. Since its adaptation to the museum in 1986, the building has undergone minimal renovations. Due to its original design features, such as open spaces with outdated window insulation and limited ability to open windows, the building compromised indoor air quality and occupants comfort. Lack of oversight on indoor temperature and humidity levels resulted in overheating in the winter and insufficient cooling in the summer. Given its status as a national heritage site, renovations were required to improve conditions while preserving the building's original structure and appearance.
Solution
To improve indoor environment control, prevent mold growth, and meet sustainability reporting requirements, the building management decided to retrofit the place with Starter Pack end-to-end solution consisting of 16 MClimate HT Sensors LoRaWAN®, 2 MClimate CO2 Display lite LoRaWAN® and MClimate Enterprise Software. This smart retrofit solution is designed to monitor indoor CO2, humidity and temperature levels, all of which are crucial for identifying areas with bad ventilation, insufficient heating and cooling, or temperature extremes and allow timely and effective interventions.
The collected data will enable building managers to implement measures that ensure a healthier indoor environment and better temperature control. The end-to-end solution includes the Enterprise IoT Platform subscription, which provides real-time and historical data management, user management with different access levels, and offers customizable dashboards for easy monitoring and control. It also features mold detection functionality to address potential issues before they happen. With the Enterprise Platform’s clear and accessible data, the museum can easily handle ESG and sustainability reporting, which are increasingly important for them.
The Museum previously attempted to implement various smart solutions to monitor indoor air quality but these lacked automation and ease of use, requiring manual on spot data extraction on regular time intervals. By transitioning to MClimate's LoRaWAN devices and Enterprise Platform, accessing real-time and historical data has become straightforward, simplifying reporting and management.
The building now achieves optimal air quality without major, costly renovations. In the future, the hardware solution can be expanded to include smart LoRaWAN solutions for automatic control, further enhancing the building's environmental management.
