Challenges

With roots dating back to 1890 and inspired by the vision of Hugo Kołłątaj, who advocated the introduction of agricultural studies as early as 1776, the University of Agriculture in Kraków has contributed to the advancement of agricultural sciences in Poland for more than a century.
Sustainability, climate neutrality, and innovation are central to the university’s mission. To support these goals, the university sought to improve the energy efficiency of its campus buildings by modernizing its existing radiator infrastructure, and improve indoor air quality and overall indoor climate. The university needed a way to enhance occupant comfort, reduce energy waste, and make more informed building management decisions through reliable, real-time data.


Solution

To address these challenges, the University of Agriculture in Kraków partnered with ConnectPoint to provide them with a turn-key solution. By installing 155 Vicki LoRaWAN® Smart Radiator Thermostat, the university improved temperature control in its common areas while reducing the need for manual adjustments by the staff. By pairing the smart radiator thermostats with 15 MClimate HT Sensor LoRaWAN®, enabling real-time tracking of the rooms’ temperature and humidity and collecting historical data, the sensors were used to enhance accuracy. Acting as external temperature references for multiple Vickis, the sensors enabled centralized and automated heating adjustments. This was particularly valuable in large spaces such as lecture halls, helping to balance temperatures more evenly and improve occupant comfort.

Additionally, the installation of 4 MClimate CO2 Sensor and Notifier LoRaWAN® enabled the university to monitor indoor CO2 levels across the campus. Thanks to the visual alerts that activate when CO2 levels exceed a predefined threshold, the solution now signals to staff the need for ventilation. By continuously monitoring CO2, this smart device helps ensure a healthy and productive environment for students and university staff.

The installation was completed in November 2025 without disrupting daily campus operations. The IoT devices were seamlessly integrated into the Nexo platform, enabling continuous data monitoring and remote control for the university’s building management team. Within a single heating season, the university achieved energy savings of 30%, while significantly improving overall indoor air quality. With battery lifespans of up to 10 years across all devices, this solution provides a long-lasting and reliable foundation that supports the university’s commitment to sustainability.
