LoRaWAN Solution Boosts Energy Efficiency at a School in Germany

🇩🇪 Herborn, Germany

Our client

Building type: School Building

Client Name: Johanneum Gymnasium

Location: Herborn, Germany

Building parameters: Several multi-storey buildings, with approx. 1,000 pupils

Product(s) implemented:
12 MClimate 16A Switch & Power Meter LoRaWAN

Third Party Devices:
1 Outdoor gateway

“Cooperation during the on-site implementation was excellent. The aim was to install an easily programmable system for controlling the heating times in school containers fitted with electric radiator heating, which would operate independently of any on-site intervention. Once the contract was awarded, the installation of all components went quickly and smoothly.”

Ingo Dorsten, Head of Energiemanagement, Johanneum Gymnasium

About Sensise

Sensise Monitoring and Control Solutions GmbH is a full-service provider of turnkey IoT solutions that transform buildings and infrastructure into energy-efficient, transparent, and comfortable properties. We integrate field devices, gateways, network servers, and platform services into a seamless end-to-end solution that is fully hosted and operated in Germany. Their solution creates transparency, enables energy savings, and improves operational efficiency, while also ensuring the early detection of anomalies and building damage. Based on LoRaWAN® and decades of automation expertise, Sensise enables scalable and secure deployments across entire real estate portfolios.

Challenges

Johanneum Gymnasium is one of the largest schools in Hessen, and comprises several multi-storey buildings and 4 container classrooms, each made of 3 recycled containers. Each container is equipped with an individual electrical heater, relying on manual, uncoordinated heating control. Without a centralized scheduling system, heaters were often left running outside of school hours, including evenings, weekends, and holiday breaks, resulting in unnecessary energy consumption. There was no reliable way to ensure classrooms were warm when pupils arrived each morning, while also guaranteeing heating stopped once classes ended. This increased the building's carbon footprint, leaving the school searching for a smarter, more efficient way to manage classroom heating.

Solution

To address these challenges, the school partnered with Sensise to implement smart heating control across all 12 containers converted into classrooms. The deployment consisted of 12 MClimate 16A Switch & Power Meter LoRaWAN® devices installed in every container, and supported by one outdoor gateway. With its compact size, electricity meter and powerful performance, supporting 100-240VAC or 24-30VDC, the MClimate relays were seamlessly integrated into the school’s electric heating system and connected to the Sensise software.

This IoT solution now enables smart, reliable classroom heating control, based on the school's actual occupancy patterns rather than manual adjustment. Classrooms can be pre-heated and warm before pupils arrive each morning, while heating is automatically switched off after school hours, on weekends, and during holiday breaks. Thanks to the straightforward compatibility of the LoRaWAN relays with the containers' existing electrical heaters, the entire installation was completed in a single half-day in June 2026, with no structural changes or downtime required.

With the electricity meter inside the relays providing precise consumption data, the school observed that heating runtime was reduced by roughly 50%, cutting unnecessary energy use during unoccupied periods.

The school has achieved immediate reductions in both operating costs and CO2 footprint, with no compromise to classroom comfort when pupils are present.

Prioritising user safety, the devices include multiple built-in protections, ensuring loose cable connections detection, preventing overheating, as well as overvoltage and overcurrent protection to minimise faults and ensure maximum reliability.

By integrating MClimate relays, the school demonstrated that energy efficiency and comfort can go hand in hand in a live learning environment, supporting student productivity and comfort while advancing the school’s sustainability goals.

MClimate 16A Switch & Power Meter LoRaWAN®

The MClimate 16A Switch & Power Meter LoRaWAN® is a compact 16A relay and electricity meter. The device is small enough to fit behind most wall switches and power equipment, enabling you to automate, track, and control your electrical appliances. This is possible as the device has 4 terminals L, N, N, Lout, and it works in a way that connects and disconnects Lout from L. With an overheating protection mechanism, FUOTA (Firmware Upgrades Over The Air), and operation in LoRaWAN Class C, the MClimate 16ASPM is ideal for rapid building retrofitting.

Recommended products

MClimate Wireless Thermostat LoRaWAN®

MClimate Wireless Thermostat is a stand-alone thermostat powered entirely by solar energy using an organic solar panel. The device features a 2.9" e-ink screen, sensor for movement (PIR), temperature and humidity sensor, LUX sensor and 3 buttons. The user can change the target temperature and see current indoor conditions. The device sends an uplink after any event as well as periodically.

MClimate 16A Dry Switch LoRaWAN®

The МClimate 16А Dry Switch LoRaWAN® is a miniature device that features a dry 16A relay. The device is small enough to fit behind most wall switches and power equipment, enabling you to automate, track, and control your electrical appliances. The device has 4 terminals L, N, I, O, connecting and disconnecting I from O. The 16А Dry Switch features an overheating protection mechanism, operates in LoRaWAN Class C, and as all other MClimate devices supports FUOTA (Firmware Upgrades Over The Air).
