“LoRaWAN switches give us more peace of mind in controlling the well. It takes 2 hours to drive to the well and back to turn it on or off manually so controlling it remotely saves a lot of time and vehicle use.”

About New Mexico State
University
New Mexico State University (main campus) sits on a 900-acres and enrolls more than 14,000 students from across the U.S. and 89 foreign countries. NMSU is a NASA Space-Grant College and home to the very first Honors College in New Mexico. A Hispanic-Serving Institution, NMSU serves a multi-cultural population of students and community members across the state at four campuses, a satellite learning center in Albuquerque, cooperative extension offices located in each of New Mexico's 33 counties, and 12 agriculture research and science centers. Plus, distance education programs give students maximum flexibility.
Challenges
Founded in 1888 as Las Cruces College, New Mexico State University is one of the country's oldest land-grant institutions, with a long-standing mission in agricultural and range science research carried out across research ranches and extension sites throughout the state. Managing livestock water across these remote, off-grid rangelands has always relied on close, hands-on monitoring. With drinking troughs fed by pipelines running for miles from a single storage tank, an undetected leak or overflow can mean days without water for grazing herds before the tank can be refilled.
The university needed a way to control water flow in the pipeline remotely, and to automate that control based on real-time water levels, and quickly identify water leaks.
Solution
To address these challenges, the New Mexico State University deployed 1 MClimate T-Valve LoRaWAN to remotely control water flow along an 8km pipeline feeding 7 drinking troughs for livestock. The devices were seamlessly connected to the university’s managing system. Built to fit standard plumbing (DN20/DN32), the T-Valve offers both remote and manual control via buttons, LEDs and a buzzer, up to 12 years of battery life, and is equipped with field magnetic detector sensor and housing tampering detection to prevent any attempts to compromise the device. Its open protocol integration allows it to receive automation commands based on readings from the existing water-level sensor installed at the storage tank level: when the water level signals a leak or a critical drop, the valve closes instantly, preventing catastrophic water loss from the storage tank which takes days to refill.
Additionally, 1 MClimate 16A Dry Switch LoRaWAN devices were installed to automate the well pump powered by photovoltaic DC current. Its dry 16A relay (100-240VAC/24-30VDC) switches the pump on and off based on the same water-level readings: the switch turns on the pump when the water level in the storage tank is below 80% and automatically shuts it off when water level exceeds 90% to prevent overflow. The relay operates in LoRaWAN Class C for fast, reliable response, with built-in overheating protection for continuous outdoor use. Both devices support FUOTA, keeping them field-updatable without a single site visit.
Together, the T-Valve and 16A Dry Switch gave the university automated, remote control over a watering system spreading across miles of rangeland, catching leaks before they can drain the tank, keeping the pump running only when needed, and greatly reducing the time and fuel spent driving along rough roads to check and control the waters.
