Challenges
Built in the 1960s, the sports club building is an aging building structure with poor insulation and high energy consumption. The building extends across one floor and comprises 20 rooms within a total area of 300 m² of usable space, with an energy consumption per square meter of approximately 270 kWh – well above modern efficiency standards.
Like many older buildings, it faces frequent issues with uneven heating, including overheated and underheated rooms, and significant heat loss. With rising energy costs and increasing pressure to reduce emissions, the need for a smarter approach to heating became clear. The sports club required a solution that could provide room-level control, real-time monitoring, and automated adjustments based on real usage to optimize energy use while maintaining occupant comfort.
Solution
To address these challenges, the sports club implemented a smart heating solution with 15 Vicki LoRaWAN® Smart Radiator Thermostats, replacing outdated radiator valves, without requiring any renovations or causing disruptions to members’ comfort. The smart solution now enables precise, room-level temperature monitoring and control, preventing unnecessary heating when spaces are empty. Additionally, the devices offer the possibility to set heating schedules for the entire building or individual spaces based on real-time and historical data from previous consumption periods. Features such as open-window detection that pause heating now ensure optimal energy use, reducing costs while maintaining members’ comfort.
Combined with indoor climate sensors and energy monitoring for gas, water, and electricity, the solution was seamlessly integrated into the Sensise platform, allowing for centralized management of heating across the entire sports club.
The overall solution is expected to generate annual savings of approximately 1,700€, resulting in a payback period of just 1.6 years while continuing to save energy over time. With battery life up to 10 years, one of the longest on the market, the Vicki thermostat will support the sports club in achieving its long-term sustainability goals.
