Challenges
The Kindergarten on Damborského is a four-class, full-day preschool in Dúbravka serving children aged three to six since its opening on September 1, 1972. Operated by the local municipal district, the single-storey facility houses dedicated playrooms, cloakrooms, nap areas, a kitchen and canteen, and generous outdoor play spaces. However, an outdated heating system and poor insulation caused energy waste, uncomfortable indoor conditions, and significant heat loss. Especially after COVID-19, management recognized the need for optimal indoor air quality to protect children’s and staff’s health. They therefore sought a solution that would enable real-time monitoring and control of temperature, humidity, and air quality, ensuring proper ventilation throughout the spaces.
Solution
To address these challenges, the kindergarten management commissioned an innovative retrofit strategy designed to deliver a lasting, energy-efficient solution. The facility was comprehensively insulated in 2024, and after this, smart solutions were implemented to monitor and to gain control over all of the spaces. They installed 4 MClimate CO2 Display lite LoRaWAN®, 22 MClimate HT Sensor LoRaWAN, 9 MClimate CO2 Sensor and Notifier LoRaWAN®, 62 Vicki LoRaWAN® Smart Radiator Thermostat across all radiators and a smart system provided by Inezis. Through the Inezis EHMS, the kindergarten now captures real-time and historical data on temperature, humidity, and CO₂ levels—and can actively control the devices. The 62 MClimate’s Vicki LoRaWAN® Smart Radiator Thermostats deliver precise, room-by-room temperature data, support customizable schedules according to working times, and detect open windows, all of which with the goal to prevent wasted energy. The whole smart installation drastically reduced temperature fluctuations, optimized heating efficiency, and lowered the building’s energy use. As a result, through the smart TRVs, optimal temperatures were maintained 85% of the time, with only brief deviations during holiday closures and an unexpected warm spell. Despite the deviation, the temperature in the non-heating season was on average one degree lower than during the heating period.
The 1.54″ e-ink CO₂ Displays lite, powered by a solar panel, allows occupants to view real-time CO₂ levels, temperature, and humidity data from one place. Complementing these, 9 MClimate CO₂ Sensor & Notifier units—equipped with acoustic alarms but no display—alert users whenever CO2 levels exceed the healthy threshold, reminding the staff that it is time to ventilate the room. Thanks to this setup, the indoor CO₂ remained within the optimal range in 91.57 % of the time during the heating season and 98.75 % during the non-heating period.
Across locations both near and far from the radiators, humidity levels measured remained within the optimal range 84% of the time. All MClimate devices—including the 22 LoRaWAN® HT sensors—served as data sources, transmitting key indoor climate metrics to the Inezis IoT platform.
All MClimate devices leverage LoRaWAN® connectivity, open protocol and firmware updates over-the-air (FUOTA), ensuring they are always up-to-date.
Ultimately, this smart installation empowered the kindergarten’s management to optimize energy use leading to up to 30% reduction of the energy costs, enhance indoor comfort for the children and staff, and improve the utilization of sustainability data.
