About Betterspace

Betterspace develops smart software solutions that make buildings more energy-efficient, digital, and unser-friendly.

With better.energy, users can make their non-residential buildings more energy efficient. The system automatically controls radiators and fan coil units, whether it is a hotel or office building, a clinic or care facility, or a school or other educational institution, better.energy reduces energy consumption.
The online management platform better.energy helps users manage their buildings. It allows them to keep an eye on their company, locations, devices, users, and better.energy modules, enabling the automated control of radiators and fan coil units as well as continuous monitoring of energy consumption.
Hotels also benefit from the better.guest digital guest directory. With its telephone feature, chat, push messages, green option, and ordering function, the digital assistant simplifies communication with hotel guests, helps generate additional revenue, and reduces costs.

With its intelligent software solutions, Betterspace creates digital, connected, sustainable, and efficient places.

Challenges

Hotel Schwertfirm is a modern, family-run hotel in Karlsfeld, at the gates of Dachau and in the north of Munich. Official partner of TSV 1860 Munich and running as a hotel since 1989, it is located away from the hustle of the big city, offering relaxation options while still allowing quick routes to Munich's city center and to the numerous sights and event locations in the area. With 2 gas boilers and energy costs soaring across Germany, heating the hotel has become a significant expense that requires careful management. In order to achieve this, they had to optimize heating times and regulate temperatures in a manner that ensures they continue to provide excellent service while minimizing energy waste. The Hotel Schwertfirm was searching for a solution to the challenge and decided to digitize its energy management system by collaborating with Betterspace to integrate the smart energy system better.energy and installing in 2024 Vicki LoRaWAN® Smart Radiator Thermostats.

Solution

To address these challenges, Hotel Schwertfirm partnered with Betterspace to deploy the better.energy software and install 142 Vicki LoRaWAN® Smart Radiator Thermostats across the hotel rooms. With Vicki in place, the hotel gained the ability to regulate room temperatures remotely based on occupancy, preventing unnecessary heating when rooms were empty. Hotel management also benefited from Vicki’s open-window detection, which automatically stops heating in rooms where windows are left open, avoiding energy waste without any manual intervention.

In 2024, the hotel installed Vickies equipped with the Rugged Backplate, specifically designed for high-traffic environments such as hotels. This ensured greater durability, stability, and long-term protection of the thermostats.Once deployed, the devices continuously monitored temperature and allowed room-specific, remote temperature control. With the support of the new boilers, Vicki’s scheduling functions and temperature-limit settings allowed the hotel to cut energy consumption by up to 35%.

Vicki LoRaWAN® Thermostats require very little power for data transmission, delivering a battery life of up to 10 years, the longest in the market. When the batteries eventually run low, planned maintenance can be scheduled, and replacements can be carried out quickly and easily.

The better.energy solution and the Vicki TRVs transformed the hotel’s heating system into a smart, efficient, and future-proof operation.

Recommended products

MClimate Wireless Thermostat LoRaWAN®

MClimate Wireless Thermostat is a stand-alone thermostat powered entirely by solar energy using an organic solar panel. The device features a 2.9" e-ink screen, sensor for movement (PIR), temperature and humidity sensor, LUX sensor and 3 buttons. The user can change the target temperature and see current indoor conditions. The device sends an uplink after any event as well as periodically.

Vicki Rugged Backplate

The MClimate Vicki Rugged Backplate is an extra-strong accessory for Vicki, which makes it suitable for public or demanding spaces with a lot of traffic.
The Rugged Backplate , outperformed seven other commercial radiator thermostats in both static load and impact resistance tests using the CHARPY/IZOD ISO 179/180 standards and EN. Through careful material selection and enhanced mechanical reinforcement, we significantly improved the durability of the design.
