“The quality of the thermostats is impressive - robust, high quality, and they fit our requirements perfectly.”

Sascha Rotschiller, Deputy Director KLVHS Petersberg.

Betterspace develops smart software solutions that make buildings more energy-efficient, digital, and unser-friendly.

With better.energy, users can make their non-residential buildings more energy efficient. The system automatically controls radiators and fan coil units, whether it is a hotel or office building, a clinic or care facility, or a school or other educational institution, better.energy reduces energy consumption.
The online management platform better.energy helps users manage their buildings. It allows them to keep an eye on their company, locations, devices, users, and better.energy modules, enabling the automated control of radiators and fan coil units as well as continuous monitoring of energy consumption.
Hotels also benefit from the better.guest digital guest directory. With its telephone feature, chat, push messages, green option, and ordering function, the digital assistant simplifies communication with hotel guests, helps generate additional revenue, and reduces costs.

With its intelligent software solutions, Betterspace creates digital, connected, sustainable, and efficient places.

Challenges

The Katholische Landvolkshochschule Petersberg (KLVHS Petersberg) is a church-operated educational and conference centre dedicated to supporting people in rural areas through programs that promote sustainable action, social engagement, and personal development. The institution comprises of two buildings: a historic one from 1953 and a modern extension completed in 2000. Together, they have 50 rooms accommodating up to 100 people, along with 12 conference and event spaces of varying sizes. As an EMAS-certified (EU Eco-Management and Audit Scheme) organisation, the institution is committed to continually enhancing its sustainability performance, which motivated the search for a solution to improve the efficiency of its buildings. The facility primarily uses wood chippings for energy, with oil heating serving only as a backup during particularly cold winters. Energy usage had not been systematically analysed or optimised. Radiators were manually maintained and adjusted, leading to inefficiencies and unnecessary workload. Heating was not aligned with room occupancy, requiring staff to regularly check and regulate thermostats by hand.
To address these issues, KLVHS Petersberg aimed to upgrade its old radiators by making them smart and data-driven. The goal was to use room-specific data to better control heating, reduce energy consumption, and further enhance sustainability. For this transformation, the institution partnered with Betterspace to implement a smart energy solution.

Solution

KLVHS Petersberg had been searching for an effective solution to optimise its building performance for several years before deciding to partner with Betterspace. Following a short technical briefing, the institution proceeded with an independent installation carried out by its in-house technicians.
A total of 322 Vicki LoRaWAN® Smart Radiator Thermostats and 8 MClimate Wireless Thermostats (also LoRaWAN®-based) were installed and integrated into Betterspace’s better.energy platform. This setup provided immediate access to both real-time and historical data on temperature, humidity, and room occupancy—critical metrics for intelligent energy management. The Vicki devices enabled precise, room-by-room temperature control, along with the ability to create heating schedules based on occupancy times. An open-window detection feature further enhanced efficiency by automatically suspending heating when windows were open. The eight Wireless Thermostats were placed in larger conference and event spaces, where multiple radiators—some difficult to access—required centralised control. These thermostats are solar-powered (with battery backup option) and equipped with PIR motion sensors. Both Vicki TRVs and Wireless Thermostats operate via the LoRaWAN®, have open protocol, and support firmware updates over the air (FUOTA), ensuring long-term, scalable use in line with KLVHS Petersberg’s sustainability objectives.
All devices were connected to the better.energy system, where a web-based dashboard was set up for monitoring and reporting. Custom rules and modes were configured for various scenarios, including occupancy-based heating logic, allowing for automated, demand-driven temperature control throughout the facility.
Thanks to the combination of MClimate devices and the better.energy platform, energy consumption has become fully transparent and costs were reduced, while daily operations for both staff and guests have been significantly less time-consuming and simple.

Vicki LoRaWAN® Smart Radiator Thermostat

Vicki LoRaWAN® is a radiator thermostatic valve fully compliant with the LoRaWAN standard. It is the perfect choice for large-scale projects as it offers amazing battery life, RF performance, and no maintenance for years as well as functionalities such as child lock, detection of opened windows, and much more.

MClimate Wireless Thermostat LoRaWAN®

MClimate Wireless Thermostat is a stand-alone thermostat powered entirely by solar energy using an organic solar panel. The device features a 2.9" e-ink screen, sensor for movement (PIR), temperature and humidity sensor, LUX sensor and 3 buttons. The user can change the target temperature and see current indoor conditions. The device sends an uplink after any event as well as periodically.

Recommended products

MClimate 16A Switch & Power Meter LoRaWAN®

The MClimate 16A Switch & Power Meter LoRaWAN® is a compact 16A relay and electricity meter. The device is small enough to fit behind most wall switches and power equipment, enabling you to automate, track, and control your electrical appliances. This is possible as the device has 4 terminals L, N, N, Lout, and it works in a way that connects and disconnects Lout from L. With an overheating protection mechanism, FUOTA (Firmware Upgrades Over The Air), and operation in LoRaWAN Class C, the MClimate 16ASPM is ideal for rapid building retrofitting.

MClimate Vicki Rugged Backplate

The MClimate Vicki Rugged Backplate is a high-durability accessory designed to make Vicki ideal for use in public or high-traffic environments.
Tested against seven other commercial radiator thermostats, the Rugged Backplate outperformed them in both static load and impact resistance, based on CHARPY/IZOD ISO 179/180 and EN standards.
With carefully selected materials and a reinforced mechanical structure, the Rugged Backplate significantly enhances the durability and resilience of the Vicki TRVs.
