Challenges
The residential building in Valladolid, with 14 floors and four dwellings per floor, was originally constructed in the 1960s, renovated in 2018, serves as one of the five pilot sites in the EU BuildON project aimed at delivering energy efficiency solutions that support decarbonization efforts. The apartments in the building, offered in two sizes (72sqm and 92sqm), each with a kitchen, living room, two or three bedrooms, and one bathroom, required centralized monitoring and room-by-room control of the indoor temperatures. Digitalizing the building's energy management system became necessary due to the lack of an individual approach, which led to high energy costs and inefficiencies - heating rooms excessively, even when unoccupied. The building needed a solution that focused on energy management without time-intensive major building renovations.
Solution
In order to decrease energy expenses and maintain a comfortable indoor climate for the occupants, the residential building required precise data and control over each room temperature. The property integrated the Veolia Building Management System with the Wattsense Bridge Gateway, which enables protocol conversion, facilitating communication through BACnet, Modbus, or MQTT, allowing the 242 MClimate Vicki LoRaWAN® Smart Radiator Thermostats to be seamlessly integrated with the Veolia system. The MClimate devices together with the MClimate Enterprise allowed monitoring and precise control over the temperature on a room-by-room basis as well as schedule creation and open windows detection that led to significant energy savings of up to 35% in the first heating season. The Vicki Thermostats utilize the LoRaWAN® protocol and have firmware updates over the air (FUOTA) along with replaceable batteries that last up to 10 years. Together with the MClimate Enterprise IoT Platform, which features an intuitive interface, a rule engine, and a free end-user app, they provide an ideal smart solution for any building.
