About Nanea

Advocating for sensible energy use since 2006, Nanea implements turnkey energy efficiency projects for industry and properties. They offer their customers modern and cost-effective solutions that reduce energy consumption and help ensure the preservation of the environment for future generations.

Challenges

The Suomen Raamattuopisto, a Finnish Bible School Foundation in Kauniainen, has a multi-purpose building that requires energy optimization. The first and second floors contain multiple classrooms and offices, while the third floor mainly houses residential apartments, all with outdated heating installations that don't allow precise temperature control. Energy was wasted through unregulated ventilation, leading to poor indoor air quality. During the initial exploratory phase of the project, it was discovered that the district heating metering device was faulty and didn’t show correct data for the previous periods. The property management aimed to maximize heating efficiency with the incoming air ventilation and, in the cases when radiator heating was on, to maximize energy efficiency and prevent heat loss.

Solution

Before the energy project began in December 2023, our partner Nanea assessed the necessary equipment needed, established the parameters and faults of the current heating system as well as the eligibility for support from the Finnish government creating a detailed action plan. In line with the report, an energy project was implemented in the school building with the primary goal of reducing operational costs. The district heating metering device was fixed, heat recovery was added to the waste air system, 131 Vicki LoRaWAN® Smart Radiator Thermostats were installed in each room, along with 6 other third-party smart LoRaWAN devices, all of which were connected to the upgraded building automation system. This allowed for individual room monitoring and control over the indoor air quality, CO2 levels, and temperature levels. The Vicki radiator thermostats allowed schedule creation, maintained stable temperature levels, and were used based on the occupancy of the rooms and the needs of the inhabitants. All the implemented innovations resulted in up to a 35% reduction in heating costs during the first heating season, improved the building's carbon footprint, simplified sustainability reporting, and achieved a return on investment (ROI) within the first 18 months.
